How to Fight Sinusitis

Sinuses are air filled pockets that serve as our small air quality control centers under your cheekbones, above your eyes and nose, and behind your eye sockets.

If you get clogged up too many times, you may end up with a permanent thickening of the sinus membranes and a chronic stuffy nose.  This is what causes sinusitis.  Doctors generally prescribe antibiotics to clear an infection.  But there are other steps you can take to feel better.

Get all steamed up!  Twice a day, stand in the hot shower or lean over a pan full of steaming water with a towel draped over your head.  Kind of like you are creating a steam tent.  Inhale the vapors as they travel up in your nostrils. If stuffiness hits during the day when you're at work or on the go, then get a cut of hot coffe, tea or soup.  You can cup your hands over the top of the mug and sniff.

Trying running a humidifier in your bedroom to prevent your nasal and sinus passages from drying out.  You will want to make sure you clean it once a week so that fungi don't creep into your humidifier.

Drinking extra water or other liquids, both hot and cold throughout the day.  This thins out the mucus and keeps it flowing.  Sipping hot teas made with herbs, such as fenugreek, fennel, anise, or sage maye help move mucus even more.

Garlic is also good.  It contains the same chemical found in a drug that make mucus less sticky.

Cajun food are made with cayenne chile peppers, which contain capsaicin, is a substance that can stimulate the nerve fibers and may act as a natural nasal decongestant.

Exercising can also bring you relief.  It releases adrenaline, which constricts the blood vessels, and can possibly reduce swelling in the sinuses.

Applying pressure by rubbing your sore sinuses brings a fresh blood supply to the area.  You would need to press your thumbs firmly on both sides of your nose and hold for 15 to 30 seconds and repeat.

Applying moist heat over tender sinuses is an easy way to wash away sinus pain.  All you need to do is apply a warm washcloth over your eyes and cheekbones and leave it there until you feel the pain subside.  This can help relieve you in a matter of minutes.
