Hemorrhoids seem like something that people should be frightened of because they sound like something serious. They are, literally, a pain in the butt! But no one should worry because hemorrhoids are quite easy to prevent and they only cause severe problems if they are not treated right away. What are hemorrhoids in the first place? They are clusters of swollen tissue with blood vessels found in the anal canal. They can be extremely painful when one passes bowel movements through the anal canal. They can be classified as either internal hemorrhoids or external hemorrhoids. Internal hemorrhoids are those which stem from the inside of the anal canal, or the rectum. External hemorrhoids are those which are found near the opening of the anal canal or the anus. Hemorrhoids are caused by what people may call as weak blood vessels or veins. This is because hemorrhoids are acquired when a person puts pressure on these veins, causing them to become swollen. A person’s diet also plays a major role in the formation of hemorrhoids. If one does not eat enough fiber-rich foods, then he or she is more likely to have hemorrhoids. Nevertheless, hemorrhoids are totally treatable. There are medical treatments, non-medical treatments, and natural treatments for hemorrhoids. Medical and non-medical treatments include Hemorrhoidolysis, Sclerotherapy, Hemorrhoidectomy, Stapled Hemorrhoidectomy, Enema, Laser, Rubber Band Ligation, and Doppler Guided Hemorrhoidal Artery Ligation, and Radio Frequency Coagulation. Amidst all these medical and non-medical treatments, most people would opt for natural treatments or home remedies for hemorrhoids. Herbal remedies for hemorrhoids include Aloe Vera, Butcher’s Broom, Horse-chestnut extract, Psyllium seeds, and Bilberry extract. Take note that you should first consult with a physician before using any of these treatments even though they are natural. Aloe Vera is a topical treatment for hemorrhoids. The gel from the Aloe Vera is extracted and applied onto the hemorrhoids. The Aloe Vera helps soothe the pain from the hemorrhoids. Butcher’s Broom is a type of herb that is related to the Lily. The extract from the Butcher’s Broom is applied topically on the hemorrhoids in order to stop the pain and itching. Aside from this, Butcher’s Broom, or Ruscus aculeatus, has anti-inflammatory properties thus reducing the swelling of hemorrhoids. This herb also has vasoconstriction effects. This means that it can cause veins to tighten. Thus, it is also used to treat varicose veins. Horse-chestnut is a plant whose extract has anti-inflammatory properties to reduce swelling. It also strengthens the veins and helps in relieving pain. The scientific name for horse-chestnut is Aesculus hippocastanum. Psyllium, or Plantango afra, is a plant from the plantain family. Its seeds are ingested to create a bowel movement that is soft so as not to cause discomfort when passing through the rectum. Finally, there is the Bilberry extract. It works by strengthening and maintaining proper function of the veins found in the anal canal. Its scientific name is Vaccinium myrtillus. Keep in mind that all these treatments would be more effective if you take in more fiber-rich foods, drink a lot of water, and avoid unhealthy habits.
