While there are many ways to communicate with fans nowadays, one such way stands higher than the rest–Email. Email is the quickest and cheapest way for bands to both stay in touch and sell merchandise to fans. Whether you occasionally send out band happenings letters or a regular band newsletter, email is the way to go. Internet marketing professionals have made millions of dollar by build large email groups and so can your band. Here are 4 ways to increase your band’s email list:

Contests - Whether online or offline this works well. At shows you can hold contests that require you to give out your email to your band for entry and give away some band sway to the winner. Online you can again hold contests that require the giving of emails for entry. This time though to keep the instant gratification going maybe give away a digital prize like an exclusive song or something. Fans love personal, exclusive thing like this and it helps build an intimacy between you and them that only true fans seek, the ones that are actual buying your cds.

Social Networks - Myspace is a community that is very popular. Many major artists have official pages on Myspace. What you would do here is find the pages for major bands that sound like your does and simply start adding them as friends. The convert of them become fans will be started assuming you’ve got music up on your page. Facebook and Friendster puts you in direct contact with millions of potential fans too and all you have to do is add them as a friend. Once has added you as a friend to a certain degree you have added them to your email list. Be careful not to over use or spam here though, most people will delete you as a friend after to many messages or comments promoting your band.

Groups - Places like Yahoo! Groups have tons of groups with tons of members. Here all you do is find a similar sounding band or genre fan club and join the groups. From there you can usually find a list of every other member’s email address. Be careful not to spam, but invite as many members as you can to your own group and collect more emails this way. Google, Myspace and several other places also offer the same type of service so try duplicating this in all three or more places too.

There are many more ways to collect emails for your band. These combined should help you get started and help you build up an amazing list of targeted members to your band’s email list. Once you’ve built your list up begin to market to your list remembering that on average it takes 6-7 sales pitches before a person actually buys something from a vender (your band in this case).
