The Mayer of Albuquerque has suggested a valid way to reduce the number of inebriated drivers with a logical method of management. Last call isn't the end of the evening under this inspired idea.

How To Reduce the Number of Drunk Drivers.

The Mayer of Albuquerque, New Mexico, has proposed a good solution to the problem of drivers who drink and drive. One of the sources of drinking drivers is the fact that bars evict their patrons at 2:00 AM.   Mayer Martin Chavez has proposed that bars stay open an extra hour after last call.  Yes, that’s right. In that last hour bars will be encouraged to serve food and soft drinks to allow patrons a chance to become more sober.  What a grand idea!

Instead of foisting people out into the streets with their blood alcohol content perhaps a bit high, and police arrest records show that people do leave in that condition, that patrons will have a chance to burn off the alcohol to be better able to drive.  Also, the hour of sobriety would give people a chance to acquire other means of transportation than driving if they are under the influence to a debilitating degree.

This is the most innovative and logical approach this author has seen in many years of living. Trying to get bartenders to cut customers off hasn’t worked effectively.  Anti-drinking ads haven’t reduced the number of drunk drivers significantly either. Doing more to encourage responsible use of alcohol from the sources, bars,  is a far better way of approaching an ever present problem than merely arresting people.

This will help unclog our local court system with fewer arrests which can be avoided with this simple, effective methodology.   Not only will the arrests go down but fewer accidents and deaths will be noted with more sober driving. The police can’t be everywhere at closing so reducing the number of inebriated drivers is superb. This idea in the largest city in New Mexico is an inspired solution and needs to be emulated all over the Nation. * * *
