I Quit My Job! If I Can Work From Home, So Can You!

How I went from a full-time paralegal position at a law firm to working from home full-time as a freelance writer.

I quit my job as a full-time paralegal and am now working from home. Yes I did! I had one of those days where I realized I absolutely hated my job working at a law firm. Corporate America was stifling me on a personal, professional and creative level.

While I knew I did not want just another one of those work from home jobs, I decided to give more attention to my freelance writing. I have always loved to write and have been writing since a child. In college, I pursued an Art degree but also took several journalism classes. I wrote feature articles for the college newspaper. I decided if other people could do it, why not work from home and pursue a full-time freelance writing career? I already had several clients before making the leap. I had been freelance writing part-time for almost two years and decided it was now or never.

There are those people who sit at their jobs every day and complain yet do nothing to change things. I am not nor will I ever be one of those individuals. If something bothers you that much, then do something about it. I worked six years at my law firm and gained valuable knowledge and skills. I just reached the point where I could not see myself doing it another six years.

Of course, I will miss the friends that I made but will not miss the position at all. I especially will not miss that hour drive in and hour drive home. I am working from home now with my office set up including my computer and printer. I have access to email, internet and client documents.

I believe that anything worth doing is worth doing it well. If you want to reach the point where you can quit your daytime job for a career you love, find something you really enjoy doing. Before quitting your day job for a work from home business opportunity, try to save a little in a savings account to keep you afloat should it take awhile for your business to make money.

It is a good idea to work at the job you want to do in addition to your regular job at first in order to get clients and enough business to do it full-time. I did this for almost two years. Above all, keep in mind that working from home does not assure you a salary and you will need to have several clients. Don't just depend on one client to keep you in business.

I liked the article. This is inspiring for me! Certainly I'm in the process of doing something like this. Thanks for the article!

For me I've been working on my exit from corporate IT for a year or two now, and am building up my freelancing - good to hear from someone who's been there and done it!
