Advair Diskus - Amazing the Difference a Little Creativity Makes!

Advair is a remarkable case of a simple change in packaging changing the demand of a product.

Advair, a commonly used drug that people who suffer from asthma are often prescribed, is used by millions of people each year for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).  Its two main ingredients are fluticasone and salmeterol.  Fluticasone is a steroid responsible for reducing inflammation of the trachea and other pulmonary tissues.  Salmeterol is a bronchodilator that has a similar effect on the body but is chemically different.  Together, fluticasone and salmeterol work to lessen the impact of inflamed coughs, shortness of breath, and the wheezing common to men and women suffering from attacks of asthma.

Advair is novel in that it comes in a different container from the traditional asthma injectors.  It comes in an easy to carry diskus that is less bulky and easier to hold in one's pockets or bag.  While to someone who doesn't have asthma, it might seem like a pointless and trivial improvement, many people with COPD prefer the new packaging immensely as it permits for people to carry it less awkwardly.  Many people also find they are not as liable to lose it.  I think it is marketing techniques like this, that focus on a narrow niche with a subtle but very desirable improvement, that are the most remarkable.  My marketing professor brought this drug to our class's attention as a helpful and productive way to reach out for greater market share.

Advair causes relatively few detrimental side effects, but there are a couple worth keeping an eye out for.  Allergic reactions are first and foremost the most important consideration as some people disagree with fluticasone.  Some people report chest pain and white, blister-like sores in the mouth.  For a full list of potential problems, consult Advair Diskus Side Effects. All told, Advair isn't all that different from most Asthma drugs.  What makes it desirable is the packaging.
