Aciphex - a simple, relatively side effect free drug

After studying Aciphex, I have to say its one of the more impressive drugs we've looked at in class.

Aciphex is an amazingly simple but effective drug.  It is highly effective at getting rid of ulcers and is one of the best ways to alleviate the pain of gartic, duodinal, and peptic ulcers.  A proton pump inhibitor, it lessens the havoc caused by stomach acids on people suffering from ulcers.  Most interestingly, it has an amazing antibiotic quality that comes as an added perk.  Helicobactor Pylori, a strain of bacteria known to cause duodinal ulcers, is killed by Aciphex, a natural antibiotic.  I have to say its a remarkable case of chemical engineering, to make a drug so simple yet so devoid of adverse side effects.

While I suppose some people get mild fatigue or find the drug to be less effective than they might like, Aciphex side effects are pretty mundane, featuring none of the dyspeptic discomfort ubiquitous to many ulcer drugs.  Granted, designing an effective anti-ulcer drug isn't rocket science, but it is impressive to see any drug that does't have hordes of people who hate it.

All in all, it has been one of my favorite drugs to read about, especially after hearing about some of the horror stories caused by (admittedly more complexly structured) drugs like Accutane, which may or may not contribute to suicide (depending on who you ask).  And Accutane is a skin drug, not a mental health drug.  I suppose I haven't ever heard of a stomach drug making people enter psychosis but at this point I wouldn't discount the possibility of it.

Cheers!
