Adderall Side Effects in the Workplace and emergent problems

A lot of people are starting to abuse Adderall within the workplace.  It is an increasingly large concern for employers because millions of people are taking it and there is an incentive for others to take it in competitive environments.  A frequently cited side effect of taking the drug is that people are able to work harder and focus longer because of the drug's (also known as amphetamine, or "speed").  The tendency, of course, is for people to become dependent on the drug in order to work, and when (as is often the case) people who consume Adderall outperform those who do not, there is something of an obligation for people to take the drug.  The problem is similar, then, to that experienced in Major League Baseball, where many athletes feel a compulsion to take steroids if they are to compete with many of the top players who do.

How is one to prevent this from happening?  Employers could do random drug tests, but it is more often than not a practice which results in higher productivity, so to do so is, at least in terms of business sense, a potentially counter-productive move.  It does, nevertheless, put unneccessary stress on workers who do not want to take the drug but feel they have to in order to compete.

Not everyone agrees, however, that this is a side effect that is problematic.  This website, Adderall Side Effects , has a long list of side effects worth looking at.  You can also contribute your own if you have taken the drug.
