Tips on cholesterol, what it means to you, what is too little and how to reduce the cholesterol without steroids.

LOWER CHOLESTEROL THE LOW TECH WAY.

If you are worried about the dietary cholesterol, omit dairy from your diet.  Enjoy a glass of Soy milk which takes away a serving of dairy and adds a serving of a bean.  Its all good!  Pour the soy milk sweetened with vanilla over whole grain cereal.  Hot oatmeal, oat bran, even the Cherrios so lauded for lowering cholesterol is a better choice then Danish or donuts.

Couple this approach with more fish, seafood and vegetarian dishes.  Vegan is an excellent life-style and reduces the need for meat we have to feed for years or months before we eat it.  This is the same meat that breathes up our oxygen and gives back carbon dioxide and methane while we deplete the vegetation that produces the oxygen we require.  Oh, yes, this is the meat that we have to kill, before we can eat it with its fat content, hormone content, and antibiotic content (and God knows what else).  Mad cow anyone?  Vegan is an excellent choice for your health and the environment.

Cholesterol gets naturally lower with the Atkins or South Beach diets but avoid the diet sodas.  Did you ever hear of water? That’s the best diet drink going and cheap, too.  And it won’t raise your cholesterol a bit. Take charge of your health with smarter choices. (And some exercise can’t hurt either!)

Next,  cholesterol isn’t just caused by eating cholesterol as much as by foods that increase your triglycerides.  Sugar, for example.  This culprit is to blame more than a pizza.  All those low-fat diet foods are full of sugar, or worse.  They make your cholesterol go up when triglycerides go up.

Fruits and vegetables and fibrous foods  make your cholesterol go down because they don’t have Low Density Lipoproteins, LDL, cholesterol in them, the bad cholesterol.   Nor do they have refined sugar or HFCS unless you are drinking commercial juices that so often have high fructose corn syrup in them.  Dead juices are a waste and adulterated with chemicals unless it says 100% juice.  It is still cooked to kill the enzymes for shelf life; the product’s, not yours.  Your mantra should be: “Raw or not at all.”  OK That’s extreme, but still good advice.

The fiber in live foods or grains moves matter along so the bile cannot be absorbed.  If left in the intestines bile has the time to go through the leaky gut, as the situation is called, and bile makes cholesterol when roaming around the blood stream.   Keep bile from going back into the blood stream and causing cholesterol to build up by earing high fiber foods, namely vegetables and fruits and whole grains.  Stop eating refined sugar in favor of other, healthier foods.

Cholesterol is also a necessary feature to have.  A cholesterol count less that 180 is a bad thing because the arteries and veins become brittle without the softening of cholesterol.  The veins crack and leak and when this happens in the brain it is called a stroke. That can harm you in a lot of ways.

The AMA claims that cholesterol over 230 is a serious threat.  That does sound high but you can lower it with a high fiber breakfast, a fruit salad with lunch, or as lunch, and a tossed salad, as an example, with the dinner meal at night.  Again this does not include a steroid that can harm your liver or mess with your head. * * *
