10 Unusual Ice Cream Toppings
Want to try something different? If so, check out this list.
- Warm peanut butter: Come on, what could sound better? Pop a little peanut butter into the microwave for 10 seconds, then pour it over your favorite flavor of ice cream. I can't think of much better to plop atop some chocolate.
- Maple syrup: Why not? It's syrup. You probably pour syrup on your ice cream all the time, it's just the chocolate or caramel or butterscotch varieties. Real maple syrup is usually pretty thick and heavy, so you might try warming it up a little and then pouring it on your frozen treat for a little extra pizzazz.
- Buttered popcorn: Ooooo, gross! Nope. Give it a try. Microwave some buttered popcorn, then sprinkle a handful on top of a bowl of vanilla ice cream (or any choice of your own). It's fantastic, with a nice mix of sweet and salty.
- Shredded lemon or orange peels: You won't want a lot of this stuff, just a little of the zest scrapped off the crust of one of these fruits. Believe me, a little can go a long way. It adds a nice fruity zing to your ice cream without going overly sweet.
- Cereal: Pick your favorite brand. Maybe you want to go for the rugged outdoors taste and should pick some granola. Or maybe you like the ultimate sugar rush, so you decide to go with some Fruity Pebbles. Either way, breakfast cereals come in tons of different varieties, all of which can bring your ice cream dishes to the next level.
- Kahlua: This one's for adults only. The chocolaty liquor flavoring of Kahlua would be perfect for a basic vanilla or chocolate, but it could even add something special to one of the more complicated flavors, liked rocky road. Don't use too much, though, especially if you're driving afterward. Bailey's Irish Cream might work, too.
- Espresso powder: This'll wake you up in the morning! It might be an overload to add this topping to coffee-flavored ice cream, but I could see how it could add a nice jolt to chocolate.
- Canned pumpkin: This could be a festive topping for the autumn. Open a can of that smushed pumpkin, mix it with a little sugar, then plop it on some vanilla or whatever you want. Might even be nice to heat this one up a little. Might seem almost like you're having pumpkin pie and ice cream together.
- Green tea: Served cold is probably best, unless you want your ice cream to melt super fast. Just pour a little green tea over your favorite flavor of ice cream. I'm thinking something sort of plain and simple, like butter pecan or vanilla, would give you the best treat. You won't need a whole lot of the tea, or else you'll end up with a sloppy mess.
- Chocolate covered coffee beans: Probably available at a local coffee shop. This will really add to your ice cream, if it doesn't keep you awake all night. It's a perfect mixture of chocolate, coffee and whatever ice cream you like best. Enjoy!
