Maya is hard to learn but you have a lot of tutorials all over the internet which helps you buidling your skill fast. You have also plenty of books and CD's with thousands hours of training. Only thing that can stop you is your imagination. You can create everything. You can animate it and make it so realistic that nobody will spot the difference between your model and real life person, car etc.

If you're good at Maya you can easily find a good job as 3d graphic. Imagin yourself being a part of the theam that create Shrek series and so on.

Of course there is plenty other 3D softwares such as 3D Studio Max or Lightwave but in my opinion Maya is the best from all of it. Interface is very friendly to user. You can styart creating your own models after few hours of basic training. You'll learn how to model, texture, animate and finally render your work.
