Homemade dog shampoo gives you the benefit of knowing exactly what is going into the products that your dog is exposed to. It can also be produced for a fraction of what you would need to pay for commercial varieties.

Are you looking for an inexpensive, natural homemade dog shampoo as an alternative to the expensive, chemical-laden varieties found in stores?  if the answer is yes, you will find that it is really quite easy to make your own at home using just a handful of common ingredients.  You will not only have the benefit of using all natural ingredients and knowing what exactly your dog is being exposed to, but homemade dog shampoo is also easy and inexpensive to make.

  1. Begin with one full cup of all natural dish soap.  Be sure that you choose a very gentle soap for your homemade dog shampoo.  Seventh Generation, Dove, Ivory, Ecover, and Dial are all favorites among pet owners.  Just as a human's skin is very sensitive, so is a dog's.  You will not want to use something that could irritate it.
  2. Add a full cup of water and gently mix well.  Be careful to not work this mixture into a lather.  This will thin out the final product so that it is not as harsh against the skin as it could have been.  If your dog's skin is particularly sensitive, feel free to add a bit more water.
  3. Mix one full cup of apple cider vinegar into your homemade dog shampoo.  The vinegar will help produce a nice shine in the dog's coat, as well as keep fleas and odors away and make sure there is no soap residue left in the fur.  This is the key to avoiding the all too common "wet dog smell."
  4. Add 1/3 cup of glycerin and mix well.  This will coat the fur and help it retain its natural moisture after the bath, keeping it soft and healthy.  Many homemade soaps use glycerin as their base.
  5. That's it!  Just pour your completed homemade dog shampoo into a bottle and store for later use, giving it a little shake to mix the ingredients before each use.

An enterprising person could even make up some labels, put their homemade dog shampoo in nice bottles, and sell it to the pet owners in their area to make a few extra dollars here and there.
