The sweet and savory flavors of chocolate and cheese are perfectly married in this toasted, nutty sandwich that’s positively delicious. Great as a rich breakfast treat, cut into strips as a finger food or quarters as dessert, this is sure to become a family favorite.

Tools and Ingredients:

  • 2 slices of 12 grain bread OR 2 sliced of whole wheat bread
  • 1 ½ tablespoons of hazelnut chocolate spread (like Nutella)
  • 4 slices of sharp/old cheddar cheese (sliced ¼ - ½ inch thick)
  • Toaster
  • Butter knife
  • Serving plate
  • (Jalapeno accented or pepper jack cheese for variation)

Choose your bread.  12 grain bread will toast up with a multi-layered crunch and will enhance the nutty flavor of the chocolate spread. Because of its added grain, and also because whole grain bread slices tend to run up to 1/4 larger than traditional breads, a 12 grain sandwich is also much heavier. A full sandwich may well serve 2.

Whole wheat bread is smaller and lighter than its 12 grain counterpart, will toast up fluffier and will not retain its crunch as long.

Toast both slices of bread until they are of the desired color and texture.

Spread the hazelnut spread, evenly on both slices of toasted bread. Be sure to carry the spread right up to the edges of the bread.

Slice the cheddar cheese and place, evenly across one slice of the toasted, chocolate spread covered bread.

Cover the cheese with the 2nd slice of bread, completing your sandwich.

Slice your sandwich to meet your serving needs. Halves work well as a full meal, quarters as a dessert, and fingers or 1 x 1 inch squares as finger foods or appetizers.

Variation: Use pepper jack or jalapeno-accented cheeses in lieu of cheddar for a spicy variation that is truly special!
