Things you should know before visiting Sushi King on Kirby Drive in Houston, Texas.

I was introduced to Sushi King by friends. The name threw me off a bit, I was expecting some low budget, tiny café-like restaurant. I was surprised to find a nice, big very well decorated place. I met up with some friends here for lunch because a friend of a friend had suggested it.

My first time there I was fairly impressed with the place. It looked very much like one of those trendy East meets West type of Asian restaurants. The staff were pleasant and attentive. Then I opened up the menu. Not to sound cheap but their prices were on the high end, there didn’t seem to be any reasonable lunch prices. Their lunch prices were the same as dinner prices for many places.

After getting over the shock of the mostly double digit lunch prices I really looked at the menu to decide what I wanted. I wasn’t in a sushi mood so I went with the shrimp tempura dish. I was a bit disappointed with their menu. There wasn’t much to choose from. The shrimp tempura was served with rice (I got it with rice but you can get a salad instead), sautéed vegetables, vegetable tempura and miso soup. My friends all ordered sushi.

I was impressed how quick they were with our food, it didn’t take long for them to bring out everything, even my dish. The food portion was fairly standard for a nice restaurant. It wasn’t tiny like an uber fancy place but it wasn’t huge either. My shrimp tempura dish was good, not exceptional or great, just good and prepared well. My friends ordered an assortment of sushi so I can’t recall which ones we had but I do remember it being pretty good. I wouldn’t say the best but it was good sushi. Overall my first experience there was enjoyable so I went back a second time.

The second time I went back with my boyfriend for lunch. We both got their bento boxes, sushi and since I was dragging that day I also ordered an espresso. Their bento boxes were good but like my first experience, I wouldn’t say it was great, just good. Their sushi this time was okay. I don’t think their sushi was ever exceptionally tasty because I don’t ever remember thinking that I have to go back to visit this place for the sushi. I did think it was worth giving another shot though.

Would I recommend Sushi King? Only if you want a nice place to take your date but be warned, you better be prepared to fork over a lot of money because it’s fairly pricey. Do I think the food is worth the price? No. I’ve had better food for less at equally nice places, if not nicer. Let me just say this, the most memorable thing about Sushi King for me was their espresso, not their food.
