Imagine a skunk running loose in your home, being chased by numerous children. This happened mine when our father came home one day with a box for us to open. Lucky for us the skunk was descented. If a skunk happens to visit your home and leaves behind that “distinct” odor, there are ways to eliminate that dreadful skunk smell.

  • You will need a liquid mix that will break down the skunk oil that can be applied to floors, carpets, walls, and clothing. Use either a homemade solution or Nature’s Miracle Skunk removal for floors, walls, carpets and furniture and Nature’s Miracle laundry detergent or Odoban for clothing. The store-bought solutions will have more of a fragrance and will be safer around humans and pets.
  • For a homemade solution: Wear a pair of latex or rubber gloves and mix 32 ounces of hydrogen peroxide, ½ cup of baking soda and 1 teaspoon of dish washing liquid.
  • Before your start, if the skunk smell is overpowering, spray a citrus fragrance air freshener or 5:1 diluted Nature’s Miracle or Odoban. You can also windows, weather permitting. Do a spot check on the area containing the skunk smell. Apply a small amount of your solution to an unnoticeable area to make sure it will not stain or discolor the area
  • For walls and floors apply the liquid solution you chose, let sit for 5 minutes and rinse the area if using the homemade solution. Odoban and Nature’s Miracle do not need to be rinsed. (For best results, use Odoban and Nature’s Miracle full strength).
  • For carpets, furniture and upholstery, apply the liquid solution, wait 10 minutes and blot with a clean towel or sponge. To remove the skunk smell from clothing, blankets, sheets: Soak in the liquid solution 10 minutes, then wash.

Wow, what a predicament! :) Thanks for these tips. I wish I had the ones on scent freshening last week when a skunk walked by with the window open and left us a nice scent for us to remember him by.
