Speed reading is useful and a time saver for students and professionals. In todays fast pace environment and Internet based business world, it is becoming more and more advantageous to develop the ability to assimilate text faster and faster.

The Mirriam-Webster dictionary defines speed reading as “a method of reading rapidly by skimming.” Speed reading is useful and a time saver for students and professionals. In todays fast pace environment and Internet based business world, it is becoming more and more advantageous to develop the ability to assimilate text faster and faster.

Basically, speed reading entails breaking the text into its key components – main ideas and key points. This is done by skimming the text and training the eye to only pick up on the words of importance.

It is important to note that not all text should be read with speed reading techniques. Legal documents are one place you certainly would not to skimp on the details. Additionally, speed reading would take away from the pleasure of reading an interesting novel.

First of all, limit distractions. Turn off the television, the ringer on the phone, and eliminate any other thing that takes your attention away from the task at hand.

Know why you are reading this piece. Are you studying for a test or reading a business brief? Knowing your purpose for reading the material before you begin to read will keep you focused. You should also know your main points. What is the key information you are seeking from this material? Have some general idea of what the main points are that you will be looking for as you read. Most importantly, do you know what you are seeking? Know what you are looking for when you start reading. As you skim through the text you can skip right over anything not pertaining to the specific information you seek.

Do some prereading before approaching the actual text. Look at the pictures, read the title and subtitles, and read the chapter headings before tackling the text. Also, read the outline of the book first – this is the roadmap to the text. Look at the information about the author and read the introduction to gain a quick understanding of the key points of what you will be reading.
