A Bloodhound’s dog snout is much more bigger in size than an average person’s nose and the olfactory membrane covers 150 square centimetres which is 50 times bigger than human nose. Bloodhound dog has olfactory ability claimed to be three million times more powerful than the human sense of smell. Researchers have estimated that a bloodhound’s nose consists of approximately 230 million olfactory cells, or “scent receptors” which is 40 times the number in human beings.  Bloodhound dog  is able to locate a subject’s trail by following the  scents which include breath, sweat vapor, and skin cells as  human shed 50 million cells per day. Bloodhound dogs have the ability to block odors and the scent stay strong for a long period of time over 100 hours old and for long distance of more than 130 miles.

Because of all these reasons, bloodhound dogs are used in tracking criminals, rescue operations and have located many missing children and adults all over the world. They are also used as hunting dogs. Bloodhound dogs also make great family pets and companions as they are loyal, affectionate, loving and are good natured.
