These are a few things you should know about defensive driving.

Defensive driving is the art of driving an automobile using all of your senses.  Driving home today I saw at least 7 people talking on their cell phones or sending text messages.  Anything you do which takes your mind off driving will increase your chances of being in or causing an accident.  This is why defensive driving is important. You should drive in a manner which maximizes your chances of staying alive. Here are a few things to help:

  1. Avoid road rage. Driving when you are upset or angry causes you to drive more aggressively. The smallest thing can set you off and cause you to make a bad decision which can lead to an accident. Only drive when you are calm and can make good decisions.
  2. This helps them to decide if there is something they need to do.
  3. These signs are there to give you information to help you drive safer.
  4. Wear your seat belt. Wearing your seatbelt decreases the chance you will be thrown from the car during an accident. It also keeps you from flying through the windshield during a head-on collision.
  5. When you drive while eating or talking on the phone, only 50%-60% of your attention is on driving. This delays your reaction time, prevents you from seeing opportunities to avoid a crash, and endangers the other drivers around you.
  6. Too many people, young and old have been lost to drunk driving. If you must drink, choose a sober designated driver.
