Five Funny Movies For Valentines Day
Not the syrupy, sentimental type? Want your valentines movie to be mostly comedy with a dash of romance? In that case, check out these funny films for that movie night with your special someone.
1) Hitch:
Will Smith stars as Alex “Hitch” Hitchens, a likable and smooth dating consultant whose own love life leaves a lot to be desired. Hitch’s latest client is a mild mannered accountant (Kevin James), who longs to start a romance with a beautiful model named Allegra. Hitch arranges for the two to work on the same committee, enabling James’ character to woo the surprisingly down-to-earth celebrity. Meanwhile, Hitch struggles to make an impression on the saucy gossip columnist (Eva Mendes) who’s busy following the romance between Allegra and her unlikely new boyfriend.
2) Made-Up:
Emmy & Golden Globe award winner Tony Shalhoub (Wings, Monk) directs and co-stars in this offbeat comedy that stars his real life wife, Brooke Adams. Filmed documentary style, the story casts Adams as divorced mom who undergoes an elaborate makeover for her teenage daughter’s video class assignment. The real fun starts when Mom’s new look wins her an admirer in the form of a funny and sweet restaurant owner (Shalhoub). Now, she has to ask herself: is it the real her he’s falling for, or the “made-up” her? Lots of laughs, great acting in this unique romantic comedy.
3) Groundhog Day:
Bill Murray plays a self-absorbed weather man who’s forced to relieve the same day---Groundhog Day---over and over until he learns some lessons about life, love, and how you treat others. Murray is perfect as the obnoxious Phil Conners, whose least favorite weather assignment is covering the famous groundhog as it looks for its shadow in a small Pennsylvania town. Phil is completely horrified when a blizzard keeps him from blowing town as soon as the story’s over, but that’s only the beginning of his troubles. When he wakes up in the morning, it’s Groundhog Day all over again. And the day after that and the day after that and so on and on. Phil is the only one aware of the vicious cycle, resulting in some very funny and even touching moments throughout the entertaining story. Andie MacDowell plays Phil’s radiant TV producer, whose sunny personality provides an interesting romantic conflict.
4) The Importance of Being Earnest:
Wonderfully funny adaptation of the Oscar Wilde play by the same name. Colin Firth stars as an English gentleman named Jack, who wishes to lead a carefree life in the city without ruining his reputation in the country. As a solution, he invents a fictitious brother called Ernest, so he can be Ernest in the city and Jack in the country. It all works smoothly for awhile, with “Ernest” enjoying the social scene and getting engaged to the passionate young Gwendolen. Things get muddled, however, when Jack’s best friend Algy (Rupert Everett) shows up at the country estate pretending to be Earnest in order to woo Jack’s pretty young ward Cecily (Reese Witherspoon). A clever, witty film that ends with a twist you won’t see coming.
5) Foul Play:
Goldie Hawn plays a reclusive librarian who unwittingly gets caught up in an assassination plot in this quirky 1970s mystery/comedy. The trouble starts when Hawn’s character, Gloria, impulsively gives a ride to a hitchhiker who’s really an undercover FBI agent fleeing some bad guys. When the FBI agent later winds up dead, Gloria finds herself being chased by some pretty nasty characters. Chevy Chase is the handsome detective determined to figure why the criminals are targeting Gloria and what the FBI agent had stumbled onto that got him killed.
