Star Trek: Least Favorite Characters

This is a quick commentary on my least favorite Star Trek characters.

I'm a Trekker and always have been. I love the world of Trek and watched all incarnations of the series and the movies to some extent. However, with the good comes the bad, and there were some characters in the vast world of Star Trek that I could live without. My top choices may surprise some, but it's my honest take on some regular characters that I really wish hadn't ever shown up in the credits.

WESLEY CRUSHER (ST:TNG) - He was annoying and boring. I never liked him. He took the universe's first blind navigator and knocked him off the Enterprise bridge. That was a shame, even if Geordi did get promoted. I can't think of a single moment where I really liked the Wesley character, not one. He was passable in a few episodes, and I did like the little sparkage with the Ashley Judd character, but mostly, I really just wanted Wesley to go away. When he finally did, I cheered.

CAPTAIN JONATHAN ARCHER (Enterprise) - The entire Enterprise series was bad in and off itself, but Archer bored me almost as much as Wesley Crusher did. He did have one redeeming quality - his beagle. Now that at least kept me focused, but it wasn't enough to keep me tuned in to watch this Jim Kirk-wannabe. I was surprised, too, because Scott Bakula is a very good actor. That said, I never thought he was right for this role, not from the first time that I read he'd gotten it in the newspaper.

ODO (ST:DS9) - Yes, I know he was different and vital to the entire Deep Space 9 series, but he just didn't have it for me. He looked weird and watching him dissolve into liquid just didn't do it for me. I didn't like the romance with Kira, either. He had more chemistry with Quark.

CHAKOTAY (ST:V) - Here again, Chakotay was key to the story, but until the last episode, nothing he did excited me. When a story was focused on him, I yawned. I didn't like the attempted pairing of him and Janeway or the mess he got himself into with Seska, who was annoying as well. However, I loved him with 7 of 9, but that was limited to just the very end of the series. Maybe if they'd started that earlier it might have saved the character. They were fun to watch. As the saying goes, though, it was too little, too late.

It sure would have been a lot easier to name favorite characters. Aside from Wesley Crusher, I had to think a little about who annoyed me enough to make this list. That said, they all do annoy me and all made me multi-task and turn away from the screen. Still, Star Trek is a big universe, and there's room for all of us in it ... except maybe Wesley.
