These movies are sweet without being syrupy and have just the right balance of romance and humor to please everyone. Great movies for Valentine’s Day or anytime.

1) Only You:

This 1994 romantic comedy is often overlooked despite it’s excellent cast, clever plot, and beautiful scenery. The story follows a hopelessly romantic teacher named Faith (Marisa Tomei), who chases a stranger all the way to Italy because his name "Damon Bradley" was spelled on an Ouija board as her soul mate when she was young. Faith is just ten days away from marrying a nice but boring foot doctor when she talks with Damon on the phone (he’s a friend of her fiancée who calls to say he can’t make it to the wedding). Insisting that it’s more than just a coincidence, Faith takes off for Italy to find Damon. With her practical sister-in-law (Bonnie Hunt), she travels to Rome, then Venice, trailing the mystery man like an eager detective. Things get really interesting, though, when she bumps into Peter Wright (Robert Downey Jr), a vacationing American who’s so instantly smitten with her that he pretends to be Damon.

2) Return To Me:

A nice romantic comedy whose likable characters have a quiet and pleasing romance. Bob Rueland (David Duchovny) is a happily married construction supervisor whose wife raises money for an animal conservation in Chicago. Grace Briggs (Minnie Driver) is a lonely young woman in desperate need of a heart transplant. When Bob’s wife is tragically killed in a car accident, it’s Grace who receives her heart and a chance at a new life. A year later, Grace and Bob meet by chance at the Irish/Italian restaurant owned by Grace’s grandfather. The two feel an attraction and after another encounter they begin to date. Things are going swimmingly until Grace sees the anonymous thank you letter she mailed a year ago on David’s desk…and realizes who’s death made her love for him possible. Just the right mix of tears and laughter, Return To Me is sweet without becoming overly sentimental.

3) I.Q.:

Ed Walters (Tim Robbins) is a likable garage mechanic who falls head over heels for cute, spunky Catharine (Meg Ryan) the moment she pulls into his garage. Catherine is engaged to marry the uptight scientist James Moreland (Stephen Fry). Luckily for Ed, though, Catharine’s uncle, the brilliant scientist Albert Einstein (Walther Matthau), would rather see his niece with someone sincere like Ed. So, with the help of three other eccentric scientists, Einstein schemes to convince Catherine that Ed is a mathematical genius and the perfect addition to her academic world. But, can the charade last long enough for Catharine to see---and fall in love with---the real Ed?

4) Win a Date With Tad Hamilton!:

Movie star Tad Hamilton makes women everywhere swoon with his heroic antics on the silver screen. Unfortunately, in real life, the actor is getting a reputation as a partier and a jerk. To fix his image, Tad’s manager decides to offer a contest that gives the average All-American girl a chance to win a date with the handsome star. The winner is Rosalee (Kate Bosworth), a sweet and pretty grocery clerk in West Virginia who loves Tad’s movies and mistakenly thinks he must be as great a guy in real life. Of course, wholesome Rosalee is more than a little disappointed by the glimpse she gets of Tad’s shallow world. Tad, however, is intrigued by Rosalee’s down-to-earth nature and surprises her by showing up a few days later in her home town. Not at all thrilled by the situation is Rosalee’s friend and co-worker Pete (Topher Grace), who’s been secretly in love with her for years. The romantic fun that follows is both funny and heartwarming.

5) Enchanted:

The lovely Giselle is your typical Disney princes living in the magic forest waiting to meet her Prince Charming. Unfortunately, just as she’s set to wed the prince and live happily ever after, Giselle is transported from the animated kingdom to the real world by the conniving Queen Narissa (Susan Sarandon). Frightened and completely lost, Giselle wanders through Times Square in New York City, where no one seems as friendly or happy as the residents of the animated world. Giselle is rescued from the stormy night by widowed attorney Robert (Patrick Dempsey) and his sweet daughter Morgan (Rachel Covey). A complicated friendship ensues as practical Robert tries to make sense of Giselle’s strange behavior. Making dresses from curtains and singing out loud in Central Park seems crazy to the cynical lawyer, but the more time he spends with Giselle, the more he starts to recognize---and longs to change--- his own pessimistic views of life and love.
