One of the biggest gardening problems we face is all the weeds that want to grow. How to prevent and get rid of weeds.

Weeds take nutrients from the soil that our plants need to produce better. And it is really hard to get rid of all weeds, if not downright impossible.

But there are ways to minimize the amount of weeds your garden has.

The best thing you can do is to keep the soil worked up so there is less chance for the weed roots to establish themselves. You can use a hoe, a soil cultivator( also know as a crumbler), or a tiller in between the rows.

You don't have to work at it constantly. Just disturb the soil every few days, as needed and that will help.

When preparing your garden, spreading mulch or compost will also be a good weed prevention measure. They will block the weed seeds from the light and warmth of the sun. That will minimize germination. At the same time, they will hold in moisture for your own plants and enrich the soil as well.

You will still need to hand weed in the rows. It isn't alway easy pulling weeds when they are tiny.  But the bigger they get, the more they will rob from your plants.

Do the best you can to get the root pulled from the ground. If the ground is really hard, you may need to cut it out with a knife. To pull the weed, while getting the root, you want to grab the weed down by the base. Just grabbing the top will cause the top to come off, leaving the root in the ground.

Weeds have this remarkable ability to grow back from the roots. So, to be sure the weed won't come back, you need to get rid of the root. And throw it out of the garden. If you don't, when you come back the next day, you may find that the weed has rerooted itself.
