Taking a Cutting

When there are plants in your yard that you want more of but don't want to buy more propagation is the way.

The first step is to find a healthy stalk with at least four leaf nodes and genetic perfection. When you take a cutting it is an exact clone of the main plant you take it from. You don't want to pick a weak or plant with ugly foliage. You want to clip the stalk beneath the bottom four nodes.

Once the clone is clipped you need to trim the leaf nodes off of the stem. With the leafs clipped trim the top leaves in approximately half. If there are any flowers trim them off. This will give the plant enough foliage to grow roots but not to much to wilt. Take a razor blade and cut the bottom into fourths slightly, not too deep. Doing this adds more area to grow roots and increases your chances of taking.

Take the cutting and if using a powder mix dip it into water then into the powder. If you are using liquid or gel make sure it is diluted properly and dip. Make a small whole in your rooting medium and place your clone into the hole. Tightly pack sand around the stem make sure it is moist. A couple times a day you need to spritz the foliage with water. When your plant has started growing new foliage check the roots. When you have a good healthy root ball developed carefully remove, place in a pot with potting soil and put in a shaded area. You want to slowly get it ready for growth.
