During a workout, the body loses electrolytes rapidly, which leads to painful cramping in the legs and other extremities. Forget replenishing electrolytes with an expensive, sugar laden sports drink! Ditch the calories, artificial colors and flavors and head to your refrigerator for an all-natural, quick alternative that has worked for professional and amateur athletes alike: dill pickle juice.

During a workout, the body loses electrolytes (salt in the blood) rapidly, which can lead to painful cramping in the legs and other extremities. To replenish electrolytes quickly, you can drink an expensive sports drink loaded with sugar, calories, artificial colors and flavors-- or, you can head to your refrigerator for an all-natural, quick alternative that has worked for professional and amateur athletes alike: dill pickle juice.  Here's how.

If you know, ahead of time, that you will be heading into a heavy workout, or activity that will result in a large loss of fluids (sweating), do a dill pickle shooter beforehand. For best results:

Put a 2 ounce shot glass on a stable surface. Bring the dill pickle jar to the glass and open. If there are still pickles in the jar, keep the lid loosely on at the top, otherwise, remove it completely.

Carefully pour approximately 2 ounces of the juice from the jar into the glass. Use the lid of the jar to hold the pickles in place if necessary.

Drink up! Drink your shot of pickle juice quickly and in one gulp. If need be, follow up the pickle juice with some water and/or a cracker.

Work out! Don't be afraid to sweat buckets. All those electrolytes will be easily replaced, shortly.

Enjoy not having major muscle cramps due to working out! If you do feel some cramping coming on, you can repeat the above steps and do another 2 ounce gulp of dill pickle juice. The cramping should be relieved within a couple of minutes.

Remember to always keep your pickle juice in the fridge after you're finished the pickles. It's also great for relieving nausea, stomach upset and hangovers and is quite palatable when ice cold.

Note: Due to the high salt and acid content, it is not recommended to drink more than 2 ounces of dill pickle juice at one time.  If you are on a salt-restricted diet, do not use dill pickle juice as a home remedy without first consulting your doctor or professional.
