If you have found a jeans with a great fit, but they are too long, you can alter the length. Altering jeans is not too difficult if you follow these steps.

You can always pay a tailor to alter your jeans or to save time and money, you can alter the jeans yourself.  Altering jeans will be challenging because of the thickness of the material, the stitching and matching the thread color. But, it can be done if you have the right materials and the right sewing machine.

Things You’ll Need:
  • Pair of jeans to Alter
  • Pair of jeans that are the right length.
  • Sewing machine that allows denim stitching
  • Matching Thread
  • Scissors
  • Measuring Tape
Find a pair of jeans you like that are the right length. You will use these to find the correct length. Measure the inseam on the jeans to find the length. The inseam goes from the crotch to the bottom of the leg. This is the measurement you will use on the jeans to alter.

Next, you will take the jeans to be altered and measure the inseam the same length as the good jeans.
Once you measure the inseam, draw a line where you will cut off the length you do not need. Note:  Remember to keep one inch for the hem.  Now you will fold the bottom to make a hem. Take the bottom of the jeans and fold 1/2" in and then another 1/2" to make a thick hem.
Machine stitching to stitch the hem. You can handstitch the hem, but machine stitching is easier. Be sure the hem is even on both legs.
Now you have your favorite pair of jeans that are the right length.
