Tired of spending a fortune on gas. Try these simple maintenance methods that are guaranteed to help you save money on you gas bill.

These fuel savings are based on driving 20,000 miles a year in a car that gets around 20 miles per gallon.

1- Most research shows that 50 percent of people drive around on underinflated tires. It is worth the time and money to keep a check on your tire pressure and keep your tire pressure at the proper pressure. Underinflated tire pressure can cost around $800 a year in wasted gas. Improper air pressure can also cause your tires to prematurely wear costing you even more when you have to buy a new set of tires. The tire pressure reccommended number is on the side of the tire.

2- Spark plugs- Change your spark plugs before you actually need to. If your 100,000 mile spark plugs have 80,000 miles on them, then they are 80 percent worn out. Misfires and incomplete combustion occur more frequently during the last 20,000 miles costing you around $600 a year in wasted gas. Each car manufactor has a reccommended time frame to changing your spark plugs. I would change them before you actually start having problems.

3- Air filter- Your automobile engine consumes around 15 million gallons of air through the air filter every year. If your engine cant get enough air, the combustion effeciency will drop drastically. Dirty air filters can cause your engine to work harder to pull in air causing more fuel consumption. I would reccommend changing your air filter every other oil change to be on the safe side.

4- Alignment- If your car is out of alignment just by .017 inches then its like dragging your car down the highway sideways. A car that is out of alignment will cost you around $200 a year in wasted gas. Thats not counting the worn out tires and alignment cost. Most alignment checks are free and if your car does need to be aligned, the cost is around $80.00

5- Change your oil- Proper oil changing intervals does make a difference in your fuel mileage. If your oil is worn out, then it is going to cause friction and heat among the moving components. heat and friction rob your engine of precious fuel mileage.

Proper maintenance and tune ups will save you bundles of money on gas and keep you on the safe side when it comes to costly repairs.
